She obtained 137 votes against 51 for her opponent, the economist P\u00e9ter R\u00f3na, who was the opposition\u2019s candidate.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cI want to be a woman of peace\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Nov\u00e1k, who will take office on 10 May, will be the first woman to hold Hungary\u2019s highest public office. In\u00a0her speech to Hungary\u2019s unicameral parliament, she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>A spiritual and intellectual renewal is necessary<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(\u2026)\u00a0<em>I will never give up sovereignty in the national sense.<\/em>\u00a0(\u2026)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I want to be a good president of the Republic not just because I am a woman, but also because I am a woman.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>I am getting ready for action. I am ready to take on all the burdens that this position imposes on me.\u00a0<\/em>(\u2026)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>As president, I want to be a woman of peace.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(\u2026)\u00a0<em>Hungarians want peace!\u00a0<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katalin Nov\u00e1k\u00a0is 44 years old. She is from Szeged, the third-largest city in Hungary, located near the Romanian and Serbian borders. A lawyer and an economist, she is married with three children. She was vice-chair of Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Fidesz party from 2017 to 2021, a position she resigned from to run for President. She has also held government positions as secretary of state for family and youth affairs (2014-2020), and then as\u00a0family minister\u00a0(2020-2021). She is fluent in French (she studied French and European law at the University of Paris-Nanterre), English, and German.
