{"id":5296,"date":"2022-02-17T07:42:12","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T07:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/?p=5296"},"modified":"2025-06-11T07:44:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T06:44:32","slug":"ukraine-for-vaclav-klaus-czechia-must-remain-neutral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/en\/2022\/02\/17\/ukraine-for-vaclav-klaus-czechia-must-remain-neutral\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine: for V\u00e1clav Klaus, Czechia must remain neutral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Czechia\/Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 After German Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s visits to Kiev on Monday (where he promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the rapid disbursement of two loans of 150 million euros each) and then to Moscow (where he stated once again that the West \u201c<em>does not want war<\/em>\u201d), and while the imminent invasion of Ukraine announced several times by the United States has still not taken place, former Czech President V\u00e1clav Klaus called on Petr Fiala\u2019s government to remain neutral in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u201cAn incomprehensible passivity\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In an open letter, the former president urged Prime Minister Petr Fiala to end his \u201c<em>incomprehensible passivity<\/em>\u201d towards the Ukrainian crisis, which he considers \u201c<em>unsustainable and extremely dangerous for everyone<\/em>\u201d. Klaus also described the current crisis as \u201c<em>the greatest threat to long-term security<\/em>\u201d in Europe.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Taking into account Russian fears\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Klaus considers that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Russia\u2019s \u201c<em>fears\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<em>are legitimate and must be taken seriously<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and that \u201c<em>the current conflict cannot be resolved<\/em>\u00a0[without Russia]\u00a0<em>or at its expense<\/em>\u201d. He also emphasized that \u201c<em>the biggest victim of the situation today and every day is and will be Ukraine itself.\u00a0<\/em>(\u2026)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>War on Ukrainian territory is not and cannot be in the interest of Ukrainians, who would pay for the war<\/em>\u00a0(\u2026)<em>\u00a0with new and profound economic upheaval, social destabilisation, and a total loss\u00a0<\/em>[of their]\u00a0<em>independence<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(\u2026)\u00a0<em>It is unwise to rely\u00a0<\/em>(\u2026)\u00a0<em>on the presumption that in a tense situation,\u00a0<\/em>(\u2026)<em>\u00a0a mistake cannot be made<\/em>.
