In an interview made by the Magyar Hírlap Hungarian newspaper, Swedish politician Charlie Weimers says that only conservative governments are taking a stand against Christian persecution. He highlighted the importance of the work of the Hungary Helps program.
Charlie Weimers is a Swedish politician and member of the European Parliament from Sweden since 2019. He is also a member of the Sweden Democrats, part of European Conservatives and Reformists.
In the interview, the journalist of Magyar Hírlap, Mariann Őry asked the politician what would he advise the European Union to help the persecuted Christians around the world. Weimers said that he had three propositions. According to him, first of all, there should be sanctions against the countries that excuse, or even encourage Christian persecution. Secondly, it would be important to define the notion of Christian persecution correctly and clearly. And, finally, the diplomatic corps of the European External Action Service should know better the directives of religious liberty in the European Union.
He also highlighted that even though every eighth person out of the two billion three hundred and eighty million Christians suffer from persecution, the leftist parties do not want to take note of the existence of this problem. He also said that when the conservatives proposed in the European Parliament to make a report of Christian persecution, the liberals refused the initiative. They considered the problem solved, saying that the Christians have the right to change their religion.
At the end of the interview, he qualified the work of the Hungary Helps Program as inspiring and praised the Hungarian government for its efforts in the interest of persecuted Christians. He also expressed his sadness that only the conservative governments step up for the persecuted Church and asked the Swedish Christians to take this fact into account in the elections of next year.
